If you drive for a living, keeping your Department of Transportation (DOT) medical certification current is an important part of staying on the road. At McKenney Chiropractic in Belleview, Florida, we understand how valuable your time is and how important it is to maintain your commercial driving qualifications.

A DOT physical is a medical examination required for certain commercial motor vehicle drivers to determine whether they meet the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) medical standards for operating a commercial vehicle safely. Whether you are applying for your first commercial driver's license (CDL), renewing your medical certification, or preparing for a new driving position, understanding the DOT physical process can help you arrive prepared.

What Is a DOT Physical?
A DOT physical is a federally regulated medical examination designed to evaluate a commercial driver's overall health and ability to safely operate a commercial motor vehicle. The examination must be performed by a medical examiner listed on the FMCSA National Registry of Certified Medical Examiners. DOT physicals assess several important areas of health, including cardiovascular health, vision, hearing, blood pressure, and other medical conditions that could affect driving safety.

What Does a DOT Physical Include?
During a DOT physical, a certified medical examiner reviews your medical history and performs an examination based on federal requirements.

Medical History Review The examiner reviews your health history, current medications, previous surgeries, and any medical conditions that may affect your ability to drive safely.

Blood Pressure and Pulse Blood pressure and pulse are evaluated to identify potential cardiovascular concerns that could affect medical certification.

Vision Testing Your vision is evaluated to determine whether you meet federal vision standards, including applicable requirements for visual acuity, field of vision, and color recognition.

Hearing Evaluation A hearing screening is performed to determine whether you meet the hearing requirements for commercial driving.

Urinalysis A urine sample is collected to screen for certain medical indicators, including glucose, protein, and blood. This is not the same as a DOT drug screening.

Physical Examination The examiner evaluates various body systems, including the heart, lungs, abdomen, neurological function, and musculoskeletal health.
Who Needs a DOT Physical?
DOT physicals are commonly required for drivers operating certain commercial motor vehicles in interstate commerce, including:

-
Commercial truck drivers
-
Tractor-trailer operators
-
Certain bus and passenger vehicle drivers
-
Drivers transporting regulated hazardous materials
-
Other commercial drivers subject to FMCSA medical certification requirements

Not every commercial driving position has identical requirements. Drivers should verify the medical certification requirements applicable to their license, vehicle, and type of operation.

How Long Is a DOT Medical Certificate Valid?
A DOT medical examiner's certificate may be issued for up to 24 months when a driver meets the applicable federal medical standards.

Some drivers may receive a shorter certification period when additional monitoring is necessary. The medical examiner determines the appropriate certification period based on the examination findings and federal requirements.
